The Scope

Salt Spray (Salt Fog) Testing is performed under ASTM Test Method B 117. This test is used primarily to compare the corrosion resistance of painted or metal coated samples. The test has been used for almost 100 years, and has been standardized as ASTM B117 since 1939. A 5% salt water solution in a pH range of 6.5 – 7.2 is atomized as a fog into the heated cabinet maintained at 95° F (35° C). Test time ranges from 24 to thousands of hours, usually in 24 hour increments. We can recommend a test length, and also an inspection frequency. Panels can be regularly inspected, and then removed based on an inspection/failure criteria.
